Alabama Blue Collards Seed Study

$125.00

Alabama Blue Collards Seed Study
9 × 12 inches
watercolor and gouache on paper
2023

In the fall of 2023 I attended an outdoor painting session where artists were invited to Rokeby Farm to paint a selection of collards that they were growing as a part of the Heirloom Collards and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange project.

I grew up eating these as part of every family gathering. Little did I know there are 15+ types of collards and that others not only shared this as a food staple but as a shared Southern cultural history. There are collards fanatics and see savers and storytellers and chefs. I had stumbled into an entire micro-world which I was lucky enough to be a part of a short while while painting these.
