About

Jamie Hurst is an American fine visual artist and art historian. Currently working in water-based media, she creates portraits of people and plants. A background in fine books and manuscripts, at Sotheby’s in New York as well as modern and contemporary art at The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC, inform her current practice.

As a former expatriate, she spent the majority of her adulthood traveling and living around the world. Originally from Florida, for the past 15 years she moved every year or two, living in places like New York City, Washington DC, Kuwait City, and Amsterdam. Moving this much has had a significant impact on her family, cultural perspective, and general outlook on life. She can see herself and her culture from an outsider’s perspective.

This constant movement and change influenced her to consider plants and flowers representative of feelings like nostalgia, home, belonging, grounding, and isolation.
