sea grapes II

Sea grapes II

9 x 12 inches

Watercolor and ink on paper

2021

This is part of an ongoing series in which I am exploring plant as portrait. Sea Grapes are a native species to Florida and do not grow outside of the region. Not many plants are so native to a place that they come to identify it. I consider my many moves and living as an expatriate or as a Southerner in New York City. The amount of times “You're not from here, are you?” has been uttered in my direction is quite frequent. But being at my beach in Florida, Honeymoon Island, standing with my toes in the sand taking in the salt, the waves, the multitude of native birds, the people, local and tourist alike, I feel as if I belong. I feel home.

As humans I feel we often try to take this feeling along with us to other places we go, perhaps into the unknown. We hold on to the physical and emotional feelings of home as memory and that grounds us through many experiences. These sea grapes are native to my beach, but I have painted them without background giving them a sense of non-place as this is how I have often felt being in all the places where they do not grow.

Sold unframed, shipping/tax included.
